Hi Kajetan and thanks for the comments. Need to do a lot of work to reach a good clear focus on the agenda for a long-term language & tech scenario. The field is expanding almost every week in various ways, as you have seen.

Quick comments:

a) yes, more clarification on what we mean by “understanding”. I still tend to follow Gary Marcus (check him out on almost any media) on the importance of symbolic learning and operations with respect to trend in neural and ML. But the debate is widening, and I certainly agree that we need a broader deeper picture of inter-modality and understanding, and how far other knowledge than simply knowledge of “words” can expand the tool box for everyone.

b) absolutely agree on the implications for the language industry (as we call it!). All kinds of things can be automated, and we need to explore the fields of language signalling in improving the way language services can deliver more insights in people, needs, documents, communication subtleties and the entire medical/therapeutic business as well.
